Johnny Depp once said: “Music touches us emotionally, where words alone can’t.” — Oh Johnny, we couldn’t agree more! Which is why we are happy that Pop-Ups today aren’t just in retail stores, they’re a great stage for any kind of kreative business and art. Schuyler Deerman explains how easy it is to discover and book musicians on his online marketplace Sidestage.
Please introduce yourself and Sidestage.
Hi, I’m Schuyler the founder of Sidestage. I’m originally from the US, but have been living in Berlin for several years. Sidestage is a website for hiring musicians, bands and DJs to perform at private events
Choosing the right music and musicians for an upcoming event can be tricky…
We make it really easy to search for local musicians in your city, and provide you filters to sort musicians by either price or type. So no matter what your budget is, or what you’re looking for, you’ll find something on Sidestage. On the musician’s profile, you can see what they look like and hear what they sound like. So before you contact the musician about playing your event, you already have a good idea of what you can expect.
How do you curate the musicians?
We want Sidestage to be a place for all artists, from electronic DJs to classical musicians. Each musician’s profile is reviewed once they submit their profile to our website. We also provide a way for customers to leave reviews about the musician.
What are the latest trends in the music industry?
Revenues from record sales are down, so musicians are making more of their money by going on tour. So the live music industry is growing. We want to carve out a space for independent musicians to earn money playing at private events, and hopefully use Sidestage as a way to launch initially fund and launch their careers.
Image a Music Pop-Up: What would it look like?
We’d have a bizarre location, with a hidden entrance. But, once inside, you’d feel right at home. There’d be a variety of musicians playing around the venue. It’d feel like a small festival, but still be very intimate. And we’d have food. Live music and food is always a great combination. We should make that happen!
